The museum was founded by Raji Punnoose, an artist and teacher, who started collecting driftwood during his walks on the beaches of Kumarakom. Over the years, his collection grew, and he decided to showcase his creations to the public. The museum opened its doors in 2001 and has since become a popular tourist attraction.

The Bay Island Driftwood Museum houses a diverse range of sculptures that depict different themes and subjects, including animals, birds, marine life, and human figures. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted and polished to highlight the natural beauty and texture of the driftwood.
