Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. It is situated in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity. The sanctuary spans an area of about 90 square kilometers and is characterized by a diverse range of ecosystems, including dry deciduous forests, thorny scrublands, grasslands, and riparian forests along the Chinnar River.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including many rare and endangered species. The sanctuary is particularly known for its population of grizzled giant squirrels, which are endemic to the Western Ghats. Other notable mammal species found in the sanctuary include elephants, tigers, leopards, bonnet macaques, Indian gaurs (bison), sambar deer, and wild boars.
