Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a small yet significant ecological haven located in the heart of Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India. It is a protected area that serves as a haven for migratory birds and various other species of flora and fauna.
Spread over an area of around 2.74 hectares, the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is situated in the middle of the bustling city, making it a unique urban oasis. It is encompassed by the backwaters of Kochi on one side and surrounded by dense mangrove forests on the other.
The sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity and serves as a crucial nesting and breeding ground for various resident and migratory bird species. It is home to over 194 species of birds, including several rare and endangered ones. Some of the notable avian species found in Mangalavanam include the Indian pitta, Brahminy kite, little egret, white-breasted waterhen, common sandpiper, and several species of herons and ducks.
