Palakkad Fort

Fort & Places

The Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu's Fort, is a historic fort located in the city of Palakkad in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the most well-preserved forts in Kerala and holds great historical and architectural significance.

The fort was built by Hyder Ali, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, in the 18th century. It was later taken over by his son, Tipu Sultan, who made significant renovations and improvements to the structure. The fort served as a strategic stronghold for the Mysorean army during their conflicts with the British East India Company.

The Palakkad Fort is situated at the heart of Palakkad town, on a sprawling ground near the Palakkad Gap, a low mountain pass that connects Kerala with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. The fort is built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, featuring massive walls, bastions, and a moat surrounding it. It spreads over an area of around 6 acres.
