Sabarimala

Pilgrimage Center
  • Sabarimala is considered one of the most sacred and prominent pilgrimage sites in South India. It is believed that Lord Ayyappa meditated here after slaying the demoness Mahishi. The temple is known for its strict religious practices and attracts devotees from all over the country.
  • The pilgrimage season at Sabarimala lasts for approximately two months, usually from mid-November to mid-January. It reaches its peak during the Mandalam season, which starts in mid-November and concludes with the Makaravilakku festival in January. Devotees undertake a rigorous 41-day penance known as "Vratham" before visiting the temple.
  • The journey to Sabarimala involves a challenging trek through dense forests and steep paths. The traditional pilgrimage route starts from Pamba, and devotees have to climb the Neelimala and Appachimedu hills before reaching the temple. The trek is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long.
  • The Makaravilakku festival is the most significant event at Sabarimala. It is celebrated on Makar Sankranti, which usually falls on January 14th. The highlight of the festival is the appearance of the celestial light called "Makaravilakku" at the Ponnambalamedu viewpoint, visible from the temple. Devotees consider witnessing this divine phenomenon as highly auspicious.
