Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is a renowned bird-watching destination located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district in Kerala, India. It is named after the renowned Indian ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, who played a significant role in popularizing the sanctuary.
The sanctuary is spread over an area of approximately 25 square kilometers and is nestled on the banks of the Periyar River. It is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to over 300 species of birds, including both resident and migratory species.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is a haven for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and wildlife photography. The sanctuary is known for its diverse avian population, including rare and endemic species. Some of the notable bird species found here include the Malabar grey hornbill, Indian pitta, Sri Lanka frogmouth, crimson-backed sunbird, black-throated munia, and several species of kingfishers, herons, and woodpeckers.
